Termite Inspection

Termites can cause serious damage to the structure of the house or building. Termite infestation involves a two-way expense: the cost of eradicating the termite (which can cost a lot depending on the scope), and the even more expensive structural repairs necessary to undo the damage. If you want to avoid this two-fold avoidable cash-out, make sure you hire the service of a termite inspector before proceeding to buy a house or property.

A termite inspection is simply a visual inspection of your home or building for evidence of wood-destroying insects and organisms such as termites. Although termite inspectors can also detect the presence of wood-destroying insects and organisms, the main focus is on the detection of potentially damaging termite colonies. The inspection usually involves inspection of the interior of the home (and accessing sub-spaces such as crawlspaces and basements), as well as the exterior of the property. The attic may also be inspected. The inspector then calls the attention of the homeowner and reports the findings in the appropriate form.

As you probably know, termites feed on wood. They actually do an ecologically important function of converting dead trees into organic matter. However, they can also feed on wood in homes and buildings, and then we know the rest of the story. There are many species of termites, the most common we know are Subterranean termites which live in colonies.

Termite infestation is best detected early on, when the colony is still small and the very little structural damage has been done. However, small infestations are very difficult to find. Most homeowners only realize the infestation as soon as structural damage becomes visible - a little too late. Termite colonies tend to avoid open air and bright lights, and they stay underground. It is not possible to confirm their presence just by visually looking at them.

Termite inspections, especially for subterranean termites can be a little complicated. It takes experience, skill and the right tools to detect them, all the more to find the queen termite, the perceived root of the infestation. The colonies are usually found in soils under a structure, or in solids inside larger structural elements such as wooden beams and posts or foundation walls. Because the termite colonies are hidden, many homeowners choose to wait until they find signs of an infestation, such as the presence of shelter tubes (or mud tubes - the highway system through which termites move from the soil to the wood). However, presence of these shelter tubes would already mean a major infestation, something which is sure to cost you a lot. Before the infestation goes out of control and cost you more than it should, it is a good idea to hire us and have your home checked.
